March 17, 2023 Dear Readers, Fear. Fear is defined as being afraid of someone or something that is likely to be dangerous, painful or threatening. Should you fear your family? Should you fear your own brother?
We live our lives in fear. Some of us fear failure, maybe you fear the dark, others fear heights. While some of humanities fears may be irrational, there is no denying that everyone experiences fear. But how does fear affect us? How does it affect our actions?
“The only thing to fear is fear itself.” (Franklin D. Roosevelt). Fear is a commonly confused emotion. Everyone’s response to fear varies. People may pass off fear as other things such as stress, anxiety, and in some cases laughter.
Is fear the only thing to fear? Maybe it is, maybe it is not. Fear is a strong emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. Some people use fear to control the people around them. Someone that uses fear to control others is called a demagogue.
The feeling of being afraid is a type of feeling in which we have all felt at one point in our lives. The person’s reaction to this feeling is different for each person. Some of the reactions would be the stress and the feeling of being vulnerable because the person would want to know on how to protect your loved ones and of course on how to protect yourself. This fear can rise through not only imminent threats but also through perceived threats. Some of the threats that a person can experience can be a terroristic attack, for example September 11 and another threat could be a natural disaster such as Hurricane Katrina.
The Fear of Reality Fear dominates various aspects of life. It can elicit physiological and emotional responses that greatly influence an individual’s reaction. For example, fear can cause an individual to experience an adrenaline rush that gives someone an extra burst of energy to lift a car or quickly flee from a situation. Fear can also cripple an individual by producing intense feelings of anxiety and nervousness.
Humans are born to be afraid. A feeling of fear is only natural for humans to feel; it is a part of who we are. However, it can be more than just a feeling. Fear can be a weakness in humans even though it is only our natural instinct for survival. Sometimes, fear is so powerful that it can blur our rationality and dominate how we think and what we do.
Fear can be defined as an unpleasant feeling triggered by a situation. It is an emotion encountered by every human being. However, the reactions of people to fear may vary. Indeed, it ranges from the loss of rationality to the capacity of adaptation in extreme conditions. Thus, fear can be perceived as a weapon to control and manipulate society.
Fear is just trying to get in the way of our lives, and control us. I think that aging is more about growing wiser and more mature than growing old. The older you get the more experienced you are and the more you can appreciate life for what it's worth. Just like Morrie said " Aging is not just decay, you know.

Fear is a completely personal thing, many of us experience fear different from the person sitting right next to us. While some scream,cry,shout or run away, we all have been scared at one point or another. Being afraid is not always bad being afraid to fail a test may give you the drive you need to study for it. When most think of fear they think of physical fears such as spiders,snakes, heights, or the dark, there are also fears that we do not think about in our everyday life. I however fear of death losing my loved ones.

In the article “The Student Fear Factor” by Rebecca Cox, it explains many different factors that a college student might be going through. The article gives many point of views from other students and what their thoughts about college was. There are some students who either are incoming high school students or are returning which can be a big fear for them the most because they don’t know what to expect from the campus vibe or even what their teacher can be like.
Before I entered high school, I was never a fan of doing tasks that took a lot of nerve. Ever since I moved to Canada, I was insecure about my communication skills because I did not know much English and I was unfamiliar with the new environment. Therefore, my insecurity led me to become timid, as I started to have social anxiety. However, at the start of high school, I was determined to overcome my social anxiety and improve my public speaking skills.
However, fears aren 't always something to overcome and get over as some kind of nightmare or weakness. It can also be a good thing that can tell stories to share for everyone who will listen. Walker speaks about fear in a different way, “It’s a kind of unintentional storytelling that we are all born knowing how to do.” (3) In a way, fear is told in which we understand in a literary way so even if others don 't know how to read and write, humans can tell a story. But there is very different perspectives to fear, “Our fears also tend to contain imagery that can be that can be every bit of vivid as what you find in the pages of a novel.”
The one fear that made your whole body shakes uncontrollably to the point where you couldn’t take it anymore. Now imagine having to live with that fear every single day of your life. Imagine being a child whose biggest fear is whether or not he is going to starve to death.
