Breast cancer is the rapid and uncontrolled growth of cells found in the breast forming a tumor. Most common in women, however, it can be found in the men as well. The most common way this disease is formed is through malfunctions in the cell cycle. Through this method, cancer has several chances to form when the cell cycle malfunctions. When the cell cycle functions normally, there are no abnormalities such as cancer. Another, less common, way for breast cancer to develop is through inheritance. This can occur when the mutated genes are inherited from a parent to a child. It is in these ways in which breast cancer can form in one’s body.
BRCA1 and BRCA2 are the genes that are usually mutated when breast cancer occurs. Though they are the most common, there are several other factors that can cause this type of cancer. BRCA1 and BRCA2 play the role of protecting the DNA of a cell. When these genes don’t function properly, the DNA cannot be repaired properly which results in additional problems which could lead to cancer. Having a mutation in these genes and resulting in breast cancer is more common among women but can occur in men. If a parent with passes down their genes to his/her child and has the mutated gene, the child has a chance of inheriting that gene. The chance of this occurring is fifty percent (BCRA 2018).
