Cancer is perhaps the scariest word in the 21st century. Everyone has had a family member or know someone who battled cancer. Sadly, many say they would rather be murdered than diagnosed with cancer, this is a very slow and painful disease. “cancer is the result of cumulative mutations that alter specific locations in a cell’s DNA” (Gibbs, 2008). Cancer development odds are related to food, environment, and heredity.
Food
Everyone knows American food is not the healthiest, but does one know that it is actually dangerous. Food is now pumped full of chemical additives to increase shelf life of products. A prophecy exists for certain genes, dependent on what genes are received from mother and father. If a specific family has a long line of cancer and that person marries someone else with a long line of cancer then the odds for their children are greatly increased. Cancer is caused by different types of mutations in any given group of cells. A mutation is the rapid production of a group of cells forming a tumor.
A human body is like a sponge it absorbs what is in its environment. Working conditions for specific occupations can be considered hazardous. For example, a radiologist is surrounded by powerful radiation everyday. Radiologists are exposed to more radiation than any average person are exposed to in their lifetime. Or a manual laborer that works in older houses, older houses have elements like insulation and tile floors that contain asbestos. Secondly, radiation from everyone's best friend, technology, can be hurting more than helping. Cell phones have powerful radiation that can pop popcorn if put in a bowl with corn kernels. Where are cell phones placed when receiving a call? On the ear, inches away from the brain, cell phones are slowly cooking the brain. Living conditions can also increase chances of developing cancer. If one lives in a city with a high smog rate that increases development chances more than someone living in a small town, or by living near a factory. Factories by-product can be hazardous
