Problem-solving skills are necessary in order to address problems because they allow you to analyze problems effectively and create viable implementation strategies for the best possible solutions. Problem-solving skills also help a manager to focus in on the cause of the problem instead of focusing on the symptoms of the problem.
Background of the Organizational Challenge

In a previous organization that I worked for the financial aid department was overrun with the task of manually processing requests for federal financial aid as well as non-federal financial aid. At the time the department employed six financial aid administrators who processed approximately 1 to 200 files per day. For every 100 files approximately only 17 were considered to be ready for the awarding process, (granting the student financial aid according to government title IV policy). This means that 83 files were not awarded financial aid. Unfortunately, most of the students who utilize financial aid were students who could only afford to go to school by using it. This meant that out of every 100 students that only 17 were financially prepared to enter into the university.

Had the administration sought out to identify the specifics of a cause to the problem they would determine possible solutions to the problems of low file awarding as well as long lines and parental frustration. Among some of the solutions that they would have come up with would be to reduce the amount of staff employed, implementing line monitors to make sure that students and parents had appropriate documentation, and benchmark internal smart objectives for the office of financial aid in order to reach predetermined completed files at different intervals throughout the academic and calendar
