In the article, “Sometimes Pain Is a Puzzle That Can’t Be Solved”, Abigail Zuger, the author, describes her own experiences with pain along with some examples and generalizations about the feeling. She claims that she is “ruled by (her) elbow” and “it is (her) constant companion, whimpering, and tugging at (her) sleeve.” She goes on to say that many people have the same problems, especially when drugs, “like naproxen and ibuprofen” are unhelpful and “might as well be cornflakes.” Finally, she explains how far we have advanced in the medical field, but “ none of (the) knowledge has translated into new treatments,” to help people such as herself.
She suggests that injury can be a blessing in disguise, and that it is important to stop and listen to the body and recognize its limitations. She stresses that injury should not be seen as a burden, but as a helpful reminder. As a result, injury could act as a way of reordering an athlete’s life. Dancer Cora Bos-Kroese experienced a serious back injury and claimed that the injury “really made her think”, and she realized she could perform differently. She decided to start listening to her body and to work with it instead of against it.
I am so happy you picked pain as your ICP project. Pain, in my eyes, has always been all encompassing. It can affect sleep, ability to move around, eating, healing, breathing, mood and relationships (Shega, Tiedt, Grant, & Dale, 2014). Personally when I am in severe pain I really do not want people around and it affects every aspect of my life. To think that persistent pain affects 80% of elderly residents in nursing homes and 50% of community dwellers, and we still do not treat this properly (Veal& Peterson, 2015).
ACL Tears and Replacements In the United States there is between 100,000 and 200,000 ACL tears a year (anterior). This number may be more but due to the limited data since if you do tear your ACL you do not have to register nothing so if you don't register that you tore your ACL then the number does not go up. Most ACL injuries come from non contact sports or athletics. Surgery is highly recommended for ACL tears.
The knee joint is one of the strongest and most important joints in the human body. It allows the lower leg to move relative to the thigh while supporting the body’s weight (Taylor, n.d.) as knee joint is one of the major weights bearing joint in the body. Knee joint plays an important role in our daily lives such as walking, running, sitting and standing. It allows physiological movement such as flexion and extension.
However, I want to do more I want to be able to follow the process from beginning to end and do the evaluations. I want to be able to do the testing and the measuring. I have set out on this journey of health care because I want to help people go from post-operative to back to fully functioning with realistic goals in place. I want to be able to walk the journey with the patients and let them know that they are not on it alone. Through Physical Therapy I feel that patients get more than just rehabilitation of an injury or surgery but they get a change in mindset from injured to functioning independently again as they did before.
Many kids are wanting to pursue a career in sports, but are these kids pushing themselves too hard? The answer is yes, these kids want to work tremendously hard to advance as an athlete. What this means is kids are getting more and more injuries. This is called overuse injuries, which is a very serious condition for these children. Using the principles of exercise science, they incorporate physiological and pathological processes to make sure patients are training and competing safely and provide an immediate response when athletic related injuries occur. Work can be found in sports injury clinics or directly with a sports club or even as a personal therapist for an athlete, either professional or amateur.

Depending on the reason for amputation, it can impact activities, functions, and psychosocial adjustment. Although the term amputation is commonly associated with the loss of an extremity, it is also used to categorize the loss of other body parts (e.g. an earlobe or parts of the nose from frostbite). Amputation can result from trauma or it may be a surgically procedure utilized in the management of other conditions (e.g. amputating toes or the whole foot in the management of diabetes).
Low back pain is neither a disease nor a diagnostic entity of any sort. The term refers to pain of variable duration in an area of the anatomy afflicted so often that it is has become a paradigm of responses to external and internal stimuli (Ehrlich GE 2003). Research study on low back pain has shown that it is a common problem in general population. As seen in Western industrialized countries, back pain is one of the major health problems (R Ayiesah and D Ismail 2007).
