Personal identity refers to the concept you develop of yourself that evolves over time. This includes aspects of your life you don’t have control over such as where you were born and raised, your skin color, and your sexuality. However, your personal identity may also contain things such as choices you make and what you believe. These aspects that are controllable are subject to change as you develop a better sense of self identity. Defining my self, I can attribute several processes that allow me to view certain aspects of my identity. Ever since 4th grade I was a student athlete playing basketball. I say one day because my identity is very fluid due to my young age and I have so much more to experience. My mother and father have raised me into the young man I am today and through this upbringing I believe most of the aspects of my self identity have developed. My compassion for those around me has not only come from my faith but my mother as well. She always stressed to never judge and have sympathy for those struggling in this world. This means those who struggle economically, socially, and emotionally. My father has brought out the respectful, passionate, hard working side of my identity. Through nurturing and discipline my father taught me several things such as my hard work ethic, attention to detail, and what it feels like to be passionate about something. His expectations for me were always to the highest extent. He held me close to perfection on everything I did. This coincided with my faith and identity as a student athlete. These attributes are exposed to change and development as I age in life. But, these processes portray the 18 year long story of my self
