Never would they have imagined going to school let alone attending college but because of them I was able to attend school, graduate high school, and attend college. Because of them I had the amazing opportunity to be born in one of the greatest countries in the world and study to become anything or anyone I wanted to be. Because of them and with the help of the Clark Construction Field Scholarship I am able to pursue a degree in Special Elementary education with a minor in Human services and speech pathology and audiology. Without being awarded the scholarship for the past two years my parents and I wouldn’t be able to afford tuition and I wouldn 't be able to pursue a degree. I am not sure what the future may hold for me
However, my plans can only become possible with the help of the Norwalk Community College Foundation. The NCC Foundation made it possible for me to graduate in a two year frame; it enabled me to take more classes during winter and summer break without having to worry about how I would afford these courses. Nonetheless, I am independently working my way through college without financial assistance from my parents and family members who also face financial crisis. However, the LEAP Transfer Scholarship would substantially allow me not only to focus on learning, but also to graduate in the spring of 2018 with a Bachelor 's degree.
My second reasoning for changing the funding and time a person can use it is to make it more beneficial to those who have it. Obviously, the program isn’t for everyone and was meant for only the ones that needed the extra incentive and help for college. By limiting the amount of people using it to lower incomes and increasing the amount given has been shown to not only increase graduation rate but enrollment rates as well. Along with this putting a cap on it after four years is better in many ways. First this allows it to be able to more of an incentive to graduate on time for any given program.
The Douglas Honors Diversity scholarship will help me achieve my educational and professional goals in many ways. This scholarship will help me continue my education and career path that I am passionate about. I am the first in my family to pursue a higher education. I am also the first in my family to deviate from a “set” path for me. I come from a family that lives off of state help, so we are not able to pay for a higher education.

I still live in the same apartment that I grew up in, and, while my parents have tried to give me as much as possible, much of the expenses I have for school and living are money that I have made at my job. I am the first child in my family to graduate college, and in doing so I have inspired my younger brother who will soon by attending a four year university as well. Currently, my father works two jobs as a janitor and as a factory worker, and my mother cleans homes, and much of the financial compensation they receive goes towards paying rent and food.
