Corruption can be defined as an abuse of power that it is being trusted for the reason of private gain. It can vary and be put into three main categories, which include; grand, petty and political. Corruption is a global issue, and around the world its perception is seen as something potentially dangerous, and something must be done. According to Transparency International’s perception index of corruption (CPI), out 176 countries and on a scale of 0-100 where 0 is the most corrupt and 100 being the most transparent possible, Colombia is the 94th country with a score of 36. Politics running, organizations creating their own agendas, getting to the point where private parties are getting “big donations” and even candidates buying their votes. Corruption is a major obstacle when talking about democracy and Colombia is no exception. Colombia has been a democratic republic with a two-party system for over a hundred years. This led for the country to have reached economic stability, but along the years its political legitimacy had weakened. When talking about Colombia, the “guerrillas” always come up. The Guerrillas or the left-winged FARC in the country has been in control for over sixty years. Mexico like Colombia has been fighting a war with corruption which includes a corrupted government, along with inside wars with the drug cartels. Under the presidency of Felipe Calderon who is the former president of Mexico, the violence increased due to the fact that he wanted to end the era of drug cartels. This only worsened because this got so big that it is nearly impossible to be stopped. Much of today’s government is involved with some sort of cartel and the level of corruption is only getting higher.
