Slavery during the periods of 1607 to 1776 had a drastic change in Britain's North American Colonies. During the time of the African Diaspora, Africans were spread all over the New World. This led to an adapting and different type of workability in the colonies. The developments started with the use of indentured servitude, Bacon’s Rebellion, and slavery.
Again, the slave owners of the American slave system saw their slaves as property and were known to discriminate against skin color, as mentioned in document 7. Also, they saw slaves less as people and more as “resources”. This “resource” was wanted by participants of the slave trade. This “resource” could be compared to gold during the Age of Exploration. Seeing the slaves were seen as nothing more than property, they were transported from place to place in horrible conditions and then, once they got to their destination, were put through the most strenuous work.
Slavery was an immense part of living in the United States from the 18th and 19th century. Slaves were seen as property of their masters and treated like animals without rights. In the minds of their masters slaves were seen as creatures that were bought to do their work. Slavery took away basic human rights from the people after they became slaves and slaveholders used punishments, rules and beatings to do this.
Due to the Atlantic Slave trade, exporting slaves increased across Southern Africa and Europe. The victims in slavery continued subjection to hard labor, abuse and profit exchange. The Portuguese were first responsible for exporting Muslims. These slavery practices disintegrated cultures, and relations. The Europeans bear responsibility for exporting slaves from Africa, while the Portuguese bears responsibility for African slave raiders.
In the book Alexander talks about how plantation owners decided to ship slaves directly from Africa rather than importing English-speaking slaves who were more likely to rebel. “These slaves would be far easier to control and far less likely to form alliances with poor whites.” (Alexander,2011, p.24). The author also talks about the status of African slaves and slavery. “By the mid-1770’s, the system of bond labor had been thoroughly transformed into a racial caste system predicated on slavery.
Following the period of Exploration, explorers discovered new lands rich with resources such as gold, silver, and other precious materials that needed to be mined, and crops that needed to be farmed. However, workers who could perform these tasks were scarce. The Native American population had been killed by disease and war, and the colonists weren’t often willing to do this labor. Fortunately for the European colonists, they had access for a convenient and inexpensive labor market via the means of African Slave Trade.
Lottie Jones Hood’s approach starts off by introducing herself to the International Congregational Journal and giving her reasons of interest in this topic. Hood begins by stating: “ There would have been no Underground Railroad in the United States had there been no Trans Atlantic Slave Trade in the global economy of the world”, (Hood, 48). Historical background on the Transatlantic Slave Trade is then provided by Hood in which she addresses that the Europeans and African nations engaged in an economic practice that enslaved many millions of Africans between the years 1441 through 1888 (Hood, 49). She also addresses that voyage for those enslaved and taken by the British; the famous Middle Passage took around six to eight weeks and slaved who survived the horribly described voyage were sold off in the markets as slaves (Hood, 50). More historical context is the provided by her in which she states that the first Africans were brought to North America to Jamestown, Virginia in 1619.
The Atlantic Slave Trade was one of the largest and inhumane human slavery systems in history. William Wilberforce played a key part in its abolishment, however; he was not the sole person responsible for its downfall. William Wilberforce can be seen as the leader of the ‘abolitionist’s’, so it can be said that he had a large part to play in the slave trades abolition although there were other key people involved in its abolition like; Olaudah Equiano, John Newton, Thomas Fowell Buxton and Thomas Clarkson. There were also groups involved such as the Quakers and Women and Women’s groups. The abolishment of slavery was not due solely to the work of William Wilberforce because there were many people who aided him in his fight for its abolition
The Life of a Slave Slavery a name known since the beginning of time but I will be focusing on the year of 1619 to 1865. When Africans first arrived at the colonial America and how they got there. They greatly influenced the lives throughout the thirteen colonies. People failed to realize they were humans just like them.
In the 1700-1800’s, the use of African American slaves for backbreaking, unpaid work was at its prime. Despite the terrible conditions that slaves were forced to deal with, slave owners managed to convince themselves and others that it was not the abhorrent work it was thought to be. However, in the mid-1800’s, Northern and southern Americans were becoming more aware of the trauma that slaves were facing in the South. Soon, an abolitionist group began in protest, but still people doubted and questioned it.

The introduction of slavery to the New World was an important aspect that shaped and influenced American culture to what it is today. The introduction of slaves set up the scene for white superiority and domination amongst American society. Slavery started in 1619, when Africans were brought from Africa over to the New World, through a transport system called the “Middle Passage”, to serve as free labor for tobacco production. African slaves became essential to tobacco production and the economy, as the Native Americans that were previously used as slaves, died off from smallpox and other European diseases. With no other option for free laborers, they looked to Africans.
The New World was built on the backs of slaves who would do different jobs for small rewards or otherwise be punished or sentenced to death. This new territory was inhabited by several different European peoples including the Spanish Empire in Hispaniola and English immigrants at Chesapeake Bay, their roles in slavery differed in terms of who they acquired to work and the type of work they assigned to their help. In the 1500’s, the Spanish people had several sugar mills in the Caribbean land they named Hispaniola. Because of diseases brought over by the Spanish people, the indigenous population of this land was wiping out and therefor they needed to bring over more people to work for them.
The beginning of the 17th Century marked the practice of slavery which continued till next 250 years by the colonies and states in America. Slaves, mostly from Africa, worked in the production of tobacco and cotton crops. Later , they were employed or ‘enslaved’ by the whites as for the job of care takers of their houses. The practice of slavery also led the beginning of racism among the people of America. The blacks were restricted for all the basic and legally privileged rights.
By using this reference, it illustrated the severity of the alienation of blacks in the Southern United States. In 1619, a Dutch ship “introduced the first captured Africans to America, planting the seeds of a slavery system that evolved into a nightmare of abuse and cruelty that would ultimately divide the nation”. The Africans were not treated humanely, but were treated as workers with no rights. Originally, they were to work for poor white families for seven years and receive land and freedom in return. As the colonies prospered, the colonists did not want to give up their workers and in 1641, slavery was legalized.
