The press and its importance were, are and will always be an important part of
American democracy. During the colonial period in America, the British monarchy put restrictions on the press, limiting what journalists can publish and bring to the attention of the public. However, Colonial newspapers had an important effect on shaping public opinion that led to the American Revolution. John Adams, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and others had published political essays that supported the colonists to rebel and fight for independence. When the war began, newspapers helped to raise people’s spirit. In 1787, in the Constitution of the United States it was recognized and agreed by its framers that the press has an important role to inform the public.
