Global distribution of material wealth is a significant ongoing debate in today’s society. Globalization along with social inequality was seen as a direct result of post-colonialism. While some had benefitted from colonialism others had fallen behind and were too far back to catch up. Between two articles, it was proven that cities who failed to benefit from colonialism can thrive due to citizens from beneficial countries. Migrants were able to benefit financially, economically and, as well as the community. Both articles used an observation process for recording data. The migrants who moved to Panama had more for their money because there was no currency difference (Benson 2013). Moving from a developed to developing country, the migrants quickly apprehended their privilege. Although many migrants moved to Panama because they could not afford to stay in their own country they still had more material wealth and opportunities available to them, then my citizen in Panama would; this makes North Americans citizens privileged. The complication with privilege is not only the inequality but it is not realizing what one has over many others. If one does not realize their own private, it can lead to emotions and actions of greed and selfishness. The Migrants understood the difference from what they had to what the citizens of Panama have, and due to this realization they reached out. Not only did they engage with the locals but the migrants put in an effort to help improve the quality of life for the people of Panama. The North American migrants realized that their migration increased the market economy for the Panamanians (Benson 2014) This increased market economy results in prices of food to increase as well. The country begins t develop. Although this seems like a good thing, it leaves the citizens of Panama to not be able to afford items like food. The migrants realized that their immigration caused some locals to suffer. Creating a better quality of life and aiding the Panamanians involve activities like charity work, volunteering and even jobs in construction such as building roads (Benson 2014).
