Romans were huge sports fans, and the Flavian emperors catered to their taste by building splendid facilities, notably the Flavian Amphitheater, Rome’s greatest arena. This building came to be known as the Colosseum, because a gigantic statue of Nero, called the Colossus, stood next to it. The Flavians erected the arena to bolster their popularity in Rome, and in this enormous entertainment center, audiences watched blood sports and spectacles including animal hunts, fights to the death between gladiators or between gladiators and wild animals, and performances by trained animals and acrobats.
