Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current trends regarding depression and suicide and to develop an awareness plan to help those suffering seek assistance without fear and shame.
Introduction:
In the United States the number of people battling depression has increased and so has the number of suicides. In 2013, one of out every twenty Americans over the age of twelve was diagnosed with some form of depression. (Center of Disease Control, 2013) When depression goes untreated the rate of suicide increase. The stigma surrounding depression arises from living in a culture where feelings of vulnerability are considered weak and unacceptable. This is especially true for men who are raised with the injunction that “big boys don’t cry”—i.e., it is not okay for men to be vulnerable and show their feelings. Columbia Wellness should work in the community to help remove the negative stigma that surrounds depression and suicide. By organizing community events throughout the country where there are facilities are located would allow people to get know the company, as well as know that it is ok to ask for help. By showing that there is someone there always to listen in their darkest hour may just save a life. Columbia Wellness can also work with medical facilities within in the community to set up confidential contact points or appointments as patients deem that it is necessary as an additional resource. We are here as a resource and by putting our name out in the community and somewhere people can go for help and without the stigma would be very beneficial. Community events are a profound way of getting this information out to the public and to spread awareness to those who might not know what is out there.
