A few weeks ago we read “Catch The Moon” by Judith Ortiz Cofer, which is a story about a troubled kid. In this story a kid called Luis Cintron went to juvenile hall and is let out on probation. He is a leader of a gang that in high school that breaks into other people’s houses. He works at a junkyard that his father owns, and he has to clean and organize hub caps for his shift. Throughout the story he faces many tasks that require him to grow up and understand his father. Since this is a coming of age story so Luis will have to go through three main tasks. The first step of a coming of age story is the childhood stage. When Luis was young he and his gang would break into different houses. In the story “Catch the Moon” it says, “their thing was taking something to the limit on a dare or, better still, doing something dangerous, like breaking into a house…” This quote tells us that he is a kid that ill troublesome and can be a bad influence. He has yet to realize that there are more tasks he will have to complete, in order to be an adult. Luis passes the challenge by completing his task of learning and understanding his father. In the short story “Catch the Moon” it clearly states, “For hours he sorted the wheel covers by make, size, and condition, stopping only to call his father and tell him where he was and what he was doing. This means he learned what some of the things his dad went through, and is learning to respect him more because he is his dad and he only has one. Luis probably realized that his father as always been trying to help him with his future. In the end Luiz has learned a few life lessons that will help him for the rest of his adult
