Nowadays, it seems to be that the news and marketing define what is and what isn’t. They control everything that we see, when we see it and whether or not we like what we see. This is the power of the media. In the essay “Commodifying Kids: The Forgotten Crisis,” Henry Giroux goes into depth on this subject. More specifically, he talks about media in regards to the kid’s market. I do agree with many of Giroux’s specific points; however, because he failed to provide a solution, his actual purpose of writing this essay now seems to be void. Many if not most of his specific statistics strengthened his argument in addition to my support for his cause. Unfortunately, he did not provide any sort of solution to conclude his argument. The way that parents parent their children is in direct correlation to how the child behaves and makes decisions. From this logic, the fault of the billions of dollars swindled out of people pockets is not solely on the people taking it. It is also on the people who are letting it happen. I feel that parents need to be more educated in this issue. My parents always discouraged me from watching television. They always tried to protect me the world that we live in and I am very grateful for that. Of course, I never really listened because I loved watching television; however, they never gave up and acted like it wasn’t a problem anymore. It doesn’t help anyone for people to act like this isn’t happening. People need to start taking the direct approach. There are countless things to do. People could boycott television to show to the market that they are serious. Some may be able to try and pass some sort of law or bill limiting the reach of sales marketing. Just think back to a time when you were presented with an issue. How did you deal with it? How can that help you now with this issue? In the end, it all boils down to thing: parents need to take a stand for the rights of their kids as well as their own to be able to watch television without having to keep up a guard against the mind games that the sales market is constantly playing on us.
