My interest in the Doctor of Education (EdD) in Organizational Change and Leadership at USC ROSSIER is to equip myself with the necessary tools and knowledge in order to provide effective leadership to further the legacy of Common Ground Theatre and help in strengthening the African American Arts community of San Diego. Common Ground Theatre (CGT) is the oldest African American theatre company of San Diego and one of the longest running African American theatre companies in the country. Founded in 1963, CGT’s mission is to produce classics and new works by and about people of African descent that entertain, educate, and connect with audiences of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds. Its purpose is to produce high quality theatrical productions that offer a ‘common ground’ where people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds can interact, connect and share their love of theatre. From the beginning, the founders envisioned a culturally diverse, socially relevant, and politically aware theatre organization that nurtured the expertise of amateur and professional artists alike and improved community relations among diverse cultures and underrepresented groups. Like many other small theatre groups, CGT has never reach its full potential in community and audience development compare to the larger and more recognizable San Diego theatre companies. I am applying for my doctorate in Organization Change and Leadership program so that I can pursue my life-mission: to make theatre arts accessible to all. I want to use these skills to promote the fulfillment of arts education in the community and to help Common Ground Theatre direct arts education
