“What are some examples of common themes and/or key ideas from the Science Fiction unit? ” The stories read by the class in the Science Fiction unit maintain a similar key idea of societal advancement. Two specific stories, “2Bro2B” and Brave New World, take this key idea further to develop the connecting theme: when government control and scientific breakthroughs align with immoral practices, society advances at the expense of becoming quite dystopian. In “2Bro2b” the scientific breakthrough in question is the secret of immortality, or rather, the complete slowing and halting of the aging process. In order to upkeep this triumph over human nature, people must die. The scientific breakthrough ever present within the novel is the mass production of humans with set characteristics. Shorter birthing periods. sped up maturity rates, malleable thoughts to influence before birth has even taken place all became possible in Brave New World. In order for this breakthrough to reach its full potential, a worldwide caste system had to be set into place. Starting with lowly Epsilons, birthed aplenty and kept borderline moronic to do manual labor, to Deltas, to Gammas, to Betas, and finally to Alphas, intelligent, natural-born leaders, all have a set role in the eternal production of life. They are forbidden familial bonds, any sort of relationships, and any individuality for the upkeep of a content society. Their destinies are out of their hands before their eggs have even been manufactured.
