Communication Theory Title: Communication Theory and “Bride Wars” No one can deny that in most films, the plot is developed through the communications between characters. The process of communication can be classified and analyzed theoretically. In the following, I am going to apply different kinds of communication theory to the film, “Bride Wars”, mainly from Symbolic Interactionism, Expectancy Violation Theory and Social Penetration Theory. The film “Bride Wars” is about a couple of best friends, Emma and Liv. Occasionally, they are proposed at the same time. Her self concept is constructed mainly through the interaction with her intimate friends and family. According to the first assumption of Symbolic Interactionism, “Humans act towards others on the basis of meanings those others have for them”. Emma always compromise for Liv. It can be found from the scene that when they were children, Emma is always the one who act as the groom. Therefore, when Emma rejects the surrender of wedding date, Liv feels unbelievable about this decision. Since it is a “must” goal in their life, the arousal is Liv declares the war for priority, reflecting negative violation valence. What surprises Liv most is Emma herself other than the message of rejection, which refers to the source of the violation. Fletcher is a particular one who affects her self concept for that they have been together for 10 years. The attitude that Fletcher gives Emma is delivering a rigid image of good girlfriend. From Fletcher’s perspective, what Emma does to Liv is violating the pleasant and nice girlfriend image in Fletcher’s perception.
