When one graduate’s college it is usually one of the happiest days of their lives, they finally get to quit their low paying job and get a job that is much higher paying and hopefully a job they enjoy. However most of the time these newly college grads do not get to go buy a new car, or a house, or whatever else their heart desires instead; they have to spend about the next 20 years paying off their student loans. But what if there was another way, so that these newly grads do not have to spend 20 years paying off loans? Well maybe there is because in January of 2015 President Barrack Obama proposed the idea of free community college. This sounds great does it not?
According to The College Board; a full year of tuition in a four-year university cost Ninety-Four Hundred and Ten Dollars without its expenses, transportation, dorm and books fee. A first year college student could go to a four-year institution by their choice of a bigger bill to pay off or go to community college as a starter of their college career with a middle size bill to pay off. But what would happen if they passed the bill about going to a nearby community college was zero dollars as tuition?
Just because education is free doesn’t mean that there will be a higher graduation rate. Students will still drop out because they didn’t meet the education requirements or they decided to party harder than they studied. Another downside to free education is that federal or state will have more control over what will and won’t be allowed in schools. Someone has to pay for it and it will be us.
The only way a state college should be free to attend is through a scholarship. College is more of a privilege, therefore it should not be free nor easy to attend. College can tell the difference between slackers and hard workers. The common belief on the subject is that state colleges should not be free to attend.
It would take some of the financial worries away and let them live their lives. They would not feel as though they have to put off getting married or having kids. Graduated students would be able to live their lives, and not have to worry about what will happen if they die with student loans. It is said that a well-educated workforce is a key to state prosperity and that college is considered the great equalizer, but rising school costs and crushing debt for students in the United States are beginning to take their toll. Community college enrollment has been on the decline for many years, and the trend may not reverse anytime soon (citation), yet steps to encourage college attendance are already being taken. Free community college for responsible students over the span of two years has already been proposed by former President Barack Obama (citation), while states such as Tennessee, Oregon, and Minnesota are offering some form of free college. Free community college is a very controversial subject with many opposing viewpoints, but the advantages of free education, such as an increased number of educated individuals, less student debt, and more educational freedom, could outweigh the potential disadvantages.
Although the argument against free community college is reasonable, opponents of this argument raise numerous positive points. The most obvious benefit of free college is that college attendance will increase. By increasing college attendance, America will become a much more developed and educated society. Everyone benefits when the population becomes more knowledgeable. Additionally, another critical benefit in favor of free community college is the fact that people will graduate with little to no debt.
There are also many strongly opposed to free community college and find many faults in the President’s plan. Free community college would greatly effect this country. Whether good or bad, its impact would be felt across the nation.
Although the cost of college can create a huge financial burden, there are reasons why it is so expensive. Many people don’t take into consideration on how much running a college really takes. Colleges provide many things for a student including housing, meals, medical care and let’s not forget instruction. Most schools spend almost five thousand dollars alone on instruction for students (CNBC). Colleges have a very hard time lowering their tuition when they have so much they will provide for the students attending.
One of these troubles is that it makes it harder for students to get into or stay in college. More and more students cannot afford the education they need (Heuvel 1).
