On November 1st, 1955, a country divided into two, North and South Vietnam will soon have a war known to many countries around the world. The Vietnam War, or the Second Indochina War occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. At the time, Vietnam had a dispute on what the country should be, Communistic or Republic, which had led war breaking out. North as the Viet Cong group while the Republic Of Vietnam group was South; eventually unexpected events started to unfold, leading towards the end of the war. To this very day, The Vietnam War has changed the ways how many civilians live their lives, especially my family.
The United States was involved in the Vietnam War in the 1960s in order to support South Vietnam’s fight for an economic and cultural ties to the West. On the other hand, North Vietnam supported the ideas of a communist economy. However, the United States’s involvement in the war caused a million of dollars and lives lost, lost of faith towards the country’s government, and divided the nation instead of uniting as one. More than three million people in the war died, and out of those three million, 58,000 were Americans. The Americans and the people in South Vietnam had fought for their beliefs of a modern Westernized country while North Vietnam had fought for a communist economy.
One out of ten people in Vietnam was a casualty which leads to the 58,000 dead and rising in Vietnam. The 21 first century was defined by this war, which resulted into the carelessness in our defense of our country. Vietnam was one if not the most tragic wars that happened in the United States. It was also a war that went on for quite a long time. From November 1955 to April of 1975 there were many deaths that went on through the war. There are many details that involve the Vietnam War in a lot of different ways. It was a war that went on for too long.
International wars between 1888 to 1930 had a significant impact on America. This essay will cover three major wars during this timeframe: the Spanish-American War, World War 1, and the Mexican Revolution The Spanish-American War of 1898 was one of the most impactful events in American history during this period. It had a major impact on the country's global scene and shaped its foreign policy for the next century. The conflict was caused by many interconnected factors, including American economic interests in Cuba, Spanish colonialism, and highly competitive news. It had a great impact on US politics and debate because it allowed America to use its power in international affairs and left a lasting mark on the country's identity.
Vietnam War was one of the longest war in American history. Many people were fighting in this war and eventually the Americans had to come in and also fight. Many lives were affected either economically and/or physically before and after the war. Like my grandma, Nga Nguyen, her life was affected economically after the war and others were also like her. My grandma and her family lived through the war and had to move eventually and lost many things they owned.
It was recorded nearly 2.6 million soldiers were sent to Vietnam to fight a gruesome war. About 58,000 of those 2.6 million soldiers perished by the time the Vietnam War was over (Vietnam War Statistics, 1997). These men had to live and die with strength, wits, impassive, and remorseless, all given by the society they were viewed in. Tim O’Brien a Vietnam War veteran born in Austin, Minnesota, was drafted into the war in 1968. He went through hell and back to write his book the Things They Carried (1990).
But, sure enough, ten years later, roughly 2,700,000 people were sent to Vietnam. That devastates a country. Within one-hundred years, people went through four of the toughest wars known to mankind, with the Vietnam war along with them. All they were trying to do was protect their country, and all they got in return was America turning a blind eye towards
The Vietnam war took a major death toll in Vietnam, United States, South Korea, Thailand, New Zealand, and Australia. Just in the U.S., “more than 58,000 American soldiers were killed while more than 150,000 others wounded”. On both sides, there were almost 2 million civilians dead and 1.1 simply on the Vietnamese side. The My Lai Massacre, where soldiers brutally killed Vietnamese children and mothers, presents an example where the war mentally changed the soldiers in the war in a very horrendous way. On the other hand, the United States took brutal losses in the Tet Offensive, where the Vietcong slaughtered over 100 towns and twelve United States air bases.
The Vietnam War was a war the United States should have never been involved in. The “Domino Theory” was a direct cause of the war. The war resulted in much death; innocent civilians and young Americans were killed. The Vietnam war also resulted in rioting, distrust for the United States government, and the loss of many lives. 58,000 Americans were killed and 300,000 were wounded.
