The stories “A Sound of Thunder” by “Ray Bradbury” and “Nethergrave” by “Gloria Skurzynski” were both very interesting to read. However one story had more of the sci-fi elements to it than the other. “A Sound of Thunder” by “Ray Bradbury” is a better example of a science fiction story than “Nethergrave” by “Gloria Skurzynski” because it is more focused on the technology in the story. The setting in “A Sound of Thunder” is more based on the future. The last reason “A Sound of Thunder” is a better example of a science fiction is that the characters are using more types of science for example time travel from the future going to pre historic times of when there were dinosaurs.
The Most Dangerous Game is a story that discusses the inner capability to humans to perform acts of extreme violence. It observes two different, yet similar characters in General Zaroff and Rainsford. They both have very similar views on hunting, as they both consider the feelings of the prey to be meaningless. However, the stark difference between the two characters is the General Zaroff hunts humans and Rainsford hunts big game. Connell made sure to write this similarity into the story for the sake of foreshadowing.

The main protagonist, Sanger Rainsford, an American author and hunter, and the antagonist, General Zaroff, a hunter as-well, have similar views in the concept of dominance and killing animals for their own pleasure. Throughout the events of the story, both characters, ironically, switch between being the ‘hunter’ and ‘huntee’ through the development of the story, and it explores the different strategies, thoughts, and feelings they experience in their situations. The theme of “The Most Dangerous Game” concentrates on the human tendency for superiority and power under any circumstance, no matter how inhumane. The theme is demonstrated through the beliefs and actions of the characters, along with the conception of the game.
Hunters believe animals are not capable of reasoning and they see them as something lesser than humans. Throughout time, these positions can change. “The Most Dangerous Game”, is a suspenseful story about two hunters fighting for survival and a struggle to not become the huntee. Zaroff’s inhumane actions lead him to his own death. He has lost the ability to tell a beast from a man, he thought of murder as a game. He believed that he needed a more complicated fight, one that would put him through trouble. Zaroff believed that he had hunted every animal and beast there was and that humans were the fight he was looking for.
In “The most dangerous game” written by, Richard Connell, he uses many devices such as: characterization, plot structure and theme to contribute to the overall meaning of the story. Characterization is a big part of the overall meaning of the story which is that survival is of those who are smart, cunning, and can adapt to their environment. The protagonist Rainsford is at a constant battle with the antagonist General Zaroff. Throughout the entire short story they both have similar minds sets and then farther along the main character 's mind set develops into something more. The reader can almost sense a self centeredness, and that he believes that there are only two type of people in this world, “the hunters and the huntees”, and he believes that he is the hunter.
General Zaroff is different, to say the least, in Richard Connell’s book, “The Most Dangerous Game.” Rainsford is stranded on a deserted island, or so he thinks. Rainsford comes upon a mansion that is owned by General Zaroff. He knows of Rainsford, who is a renowned author of a book about the hunt, as well as everything and everywhere Rainsford has hunted. General Zaroff is also a hunter, but he goes to the extreme.
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” the main character Rainsford had gotten stranded on a dangerous island where Zaroff, a Russian Cossack General, hunted humans for sport. He feels that God put the weak on earth to give the strong pleasure, and up until it was his turn to be hunted, so did Rainsford. Earlier in the story Rainsford had stated, “The world is made up of two classes-- the hunters and the huntees.” And as harsh as it may sound, it is technically correct. The world is made of hunters and huntees, predator and prey.
