I see a perspective of the quotation, "Character is what you are in the dark.", by Dwight Lyman Moody in the short story, "Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. This quotation gives the meaning that you see the real characteristic of a character when they are alone, and no one else is around to see what they are doing or how they are acting. You can see some examples of this perspective in the short story with characters General Zaroff and Rainsford. For instance, when speaking with Rainsford about hunting The General states, "It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason." (Connell P.12).
The Most Dangerous Game While reading the short story, “The most Dangerous Game”,Rainsford killed General Zaroff Others might say it was okay for Rainsford to kill General Zaroff but however he was not justified in killing Zaroff. During “The Most Dangerous Game” The Author says “It must have courage, cunning, and, all of the above. It must be able to reason.”
Without literary devices, the stories you read would be dull and uneventful. This is why Richard Connell effectively uses similes and imagery in “The Most Dangerous Game” to help give it life. In this story, Connell used similes to give the reader a feeling of how things looked or felt. On page 19 the author wrote “...but it was like trying to see through a blanket” (Connell).

General Zaroff character trait of challenging, motivates Zaroff to tell Rainsford, “you’ll find this game worth playing,” the general said enthusiastically. “[Rainsford] brain against [Zaroff]. [Rainsford] woodcraft against [Zaroff], [Rainsford] strength and stamina against [Zaroff]”(30). The Most Dangerous Game Conflicts All stories have to have a conflict, the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell has three important conflicts. Man against man, man against nature, man against himself are the three main conflicts that take place. For man against man Rainsford and General Zaroff are fighting each other in the hunting ‘game’. In the short stories “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury and “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, both main characters are great, experienced and risky hunters. Travis from “A Sound of Thunder” takes people through a time machine back in time to hunt dinosaurs. General Zaroff from “The Most Dangerous Game” has found a new interest instead of hunting animals, and he now hunts people. Both of these stories involve hunting out of the ordinary things and show why each character chooses to do so. Although Travis and General Zaroff are both great, experienced hunters, they differ in the game they hunt, their attitudes towards others, and their motivation for shooting people.
Not only was rainsford in a conflict with General Zaroff he is in conflict with himself as he is finding his way to Ship Trap Island. “‘I must keep my nerve, I must keep my nerve,’ he said through tight teeth” (12). Rainsford also had a conflict with himself on the island when he was deciding what to do to get away from Zaroff. Rainsford was able to overcome the internal conflict when the dogs were chasing him and he needed to make the decision to jump into the water, fight the dogs, or climb a tree and hide. Man versus himself is very important to Connell’s story.
“The Most Dangerous Game,” a short story by Richard Connell, dives into the discussion over whether animals have feelings, and if it is fine for them to be hunted for a human’s own entertainment. The main protagonist, Sanger Rainsford, an American author and hunter, and the antagonist, General Zaroff, a hunter as-well, have similar views in the concept of dominance and killing animals for their own pleasure. Throughout the events of the story, both characters, ironically, switch between being the ‘hunter’ and ‘huntee’ through the development of the story, and it explores the different strategies, thoughts, and feelings they experience in their situations. The theme of “The Most Dangerous Game” concentrates on the human tendency for superiority and power under any circumstance, no matter how inhumane. The theme is demonstrated through the beliefs and actions of the characters, along with the conception of the game.
Also, General Zaroff is an extreme hunter and doesn’t find pleasure in hunting regular animals. Zaroff says the most dangerous game is humans because they have the ability to reason. Rainsford is going to be hunted and is given a certain amount of time to survive. Moreover, while Rainsford is being hunted Zaroff
Hunters believe animals are not capable of reasoning and they see them as something lesser than humans. Throughout time, these positions can change. The short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, consists of General Zaroff being the hunter and Rainsford being the hunted. During the story, their positions change to the complete opposite.
