Did you know that a poem and a folktale have the same universal theme? The poem "Abuelito Who?" and the folktale "The Old Grandfather And His Little Son" has a different form, but they have the same theme. This essay will compare and contrast the folktale and the poem and break down the similarities and differences. One similarity between the theme is that they both follow the universal theme of you should treat people the right way. “The young peasant and his wife looked at each other, and tears filled their eyes. They were ashamed because they had treated the old grandfather so meanly, and from that day they again let the old man eat with them at the table and took better care of him.” This quote is really important and demonstrates that the folktale follows the universal theme because they ended up treating the grandfather better at the end of the story. One similarity between both of these is that in both of the stories, the characters are good at the end. In both the poem and the folktale the characters change or were always good which means that they were good. They were no antagonist characters at the end of the poem and the folktale. The son and his wife used to be antagonists in the story but they learned their lesson. Evidence to show this is, “They were ashamed because they had treated the old grandfather so meanly, and from that day they again let the old man eat with them at the table and took better care of him.” This evidence commends that at the beginning of the story, they did not treat him well, but then they started to treat him well. However, a difference between these two is that in the poem there were no antagonists, and in the folktale there were.
