The universe is an illusory realm of reality and fantasy, creating a misconception in an individual’s journey of life. Ruby Moon, a play written in 2003 by Matt Cameron, engages the audience through a vast sense of absurdity and ambiguity of the real world. The physical events taking place reinforce the notion of inner struggles encountered by the characters. A unique but similar journey is explicated by the poet Edgar Allan Poe, in the text “Annabel Lee” as he portrays his personal experiences shaped by the tragedy of the poet’s beloved, Annabel, disappearing amidst the powerful forces of nature. The central concept between both texts emphasises on the deprivation of loss which is expressed to the audience through emotions and techniques therefore creating a story for every individual. Ruby Moon convey Ray and Sylvie’s journey of an unstable marriage life due to different events in the play and the character, Sid Craven discovering his purpose in life. However, the poem Annabel Lee best explores the poet’s dark journey of love and his tormenting inner experience in relation to Annabel.

While the death of a beautiful woman is the central theme in this text, Annabel Lee presents a deeper concept of eternal love through the use of imagery and other various elements of poetry. Visual imagery allows Poe to build a significant connection with the reader and become more involved through the use of strong, vivid language. For instance, such as “the wind blew out of a cloud, chilling…” convey the narrator’s feelings by using elements of nature and expressions that are communicative to engage one’s tactile sensory due to words such as “chilling”.
