As I can see his way of thinking, I suppose that he identified passion and emotions as enemies of his own mind, because both of the mentioned human characteristics cause vulnerability that he intended to hide by the image of perfectly designed works. Eventually he found his own voice and ended up creating literature by the use of elements that he thought to be the most poetic and sentimental, such as death and beauty.
