This passage describes Poe 's life influences and his many styles of writing. Poe lost his parents at a young age as his mother died, and his father abandoned him. After Poe lost both his parents, he was raised by foster parents and attended boarding school from the age of six to eleven. As a young adult, he moved to Boston where he wrote his first poems. While in Boston, he spent time in the army and at West Point. He struggled with gambling and was in debt for most of his life In Poe 's later years, he moved to Baltimore to live with his aunt Marie and his cousin Virginia, whom he later married. They moved between Richmond, Philadelphia and New York. He had his most successful years while serving as editor and contributor of the "Southern Literacy Messenger". Science fiction is one of Poe 's most popular genres. One of Poe 's many achievements is creating the treasure-mystery. Another genre that Poe is famous for is tales of terror. Poe labeled his terrifying tales, such as "Morella", as arabesques while he referred to his humorous satires, such as "The Black Cat", as grotesques. He could create horror stories that touched the reader physically. In "The Philosophy of Composition", Poe detailed his writing process for "The Raven". This poem is an example of how Poe 's writing not only grabbed the attention of general readers but also satisfied the
