What is heroism? Do heroes exist in reality? Is it important to have heroes? Should a hero be a famous person? Some people believe that a hero is a person who is known by his noble or courageous actions (Oxford English Dictionary, 2014). Or others simply believe that a hero is a person with supernatural talents that save the whole world alone or with the cooperation of some people. A hero is also a person who has strong, confident, and persisting characteristics. Although both Carl Brashear and Benjamin Oliver Davis are heroes, I believe that Brashear is more inspirational in bringing about change in the world than Davis for various reasons.

Since both heroes were African Americans, they went through many hardships in order to conserve their rights as human beings. Davis once said, “All the blacks in the segregated forces,” as cited in Goldstein, “operated like they had to prove they could fly an airplane when everyone believed they were too stupid” (2002, para.6). In addition to that, Brashear and Davis received several awards for their achievements. For instance, “Men of Honor” is a movie that acts out Carl’s life, while Benjamin got medals, such as the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal. Another similarity between these two heroic figures shows their influence on people. Those two people did not just influence the people they encountered but became the role models to many people in the world even years after their death. As being a diver with one leg, Brashear has touched the hearts of millions of people who were disabled. His action showed them that whatever the situation is, one should not give up and never surrender to a certain disability. On the other hand, after Davis’s death some schools where named after him due to the great acts he did (Chamberlain, 2012). As we can see, Carl Brashear and Benjamin O.
