Imagine getting to go down and visit the ocean and getting the feeling of the breeze of the ocean and the warm sun shining down when all alone. Gary Paulsen wrote two short stories talking about the beauty of the ocean when alone; ‘Caught by the Sea’ and ‘The Voyage of the Frog’. In these short stories, the character is explaining the beauty of the ocean and the intriguing creatures of the ocean.
The reader can tell that in both stories the characters find the concept of the ocean very beautiful and fascinating. The author's tone and the word choices used describe the ocean in a beautiful light. The short stories are similar because of the way they talk about the ocean and the fascination with the ocean in the short stories is clear by the word choice. In ‘Caught by the Sea’, it states “Amazing that I am greeted by the sea”(Paulsen, par.7). The characters show their interest in these creatures through their dialogue being used. For example, this quote from ‘Caught by the Sea’ ‘While I lay in the calm, all around the boat the sea seethed with life. After the dolphins came to some sharks, three or four were on call to clean up the debris from the slaughter” (Paulsen par.6). This quote is showing how intriguing the ocean creatures are to this character and that the character enjoys these ocean creatures. The short story, ‘The Voyage of the Frog’ states “It rose in a clean curve just in front of the bowsprit, five, six feet out of the water in leap of joy that only dolphins can make, carrying with it a shroud of splashing blue-green fire that whirled and spiraled in the darkness to follow the dolphin up…” (Paulsen par.6).
