While there are many types of ‘more than friends’ both shallow and intimate, a pair can take a friendship in whichever direction a couple chooses to. Through the narrators’ infatuation with a peacock in The Heart of Peacock by Emily Carr and the compassionate, loving romance between Dr. Reefy and the tall dark girl in Paper Pills by Sharon Anderson, both connections take on different approaches before developing a strong nurturing type of friendship. From looks, personality, and a growing relation, a base is what both duos need to get started.

Reefy and the tall dark girl’s romance started on a different path. They did not begin with appearances but with personality. Though Dr. Reefy is perceived as an oddball character, the girl was able to see through Reefy’s strange exterior and into his undermined true self. Although most have viewed him as eccentric and weird, the tall dark girl viewed him as one of the “…only a few gnarled apples that the pickers have rejected” (6), referring to those who may seem ambiguous but have the hidden attributes that makes them valuable. Those who would view trash as something different can gain special insight on what others have missed; that “only the few know the sweetness of the twisted apples” (6). Showing that a cover is not a soul determiner of complete companionship, what brought them together is the tragic incident when “…the moment of [a suitor’s] passion bit [the girl's] shoulder"(11) leaving "the marks of his teeth shown [for days].” (11). Dr. Reefy shows his compassion towards her by providing emotional support with safety and relief through such action of “…[taking her,] driving into the country with [him]”(13); making them grow closer till the end.
