Olaudah Equiano and Henry “Box” Brown Olaudah Equiano and Henry Brown were both inspiring men with a fascinating journey to freedom. They were enslaved and were both hoping to be free. Each had unique and intriguing stories that made their life exceptional (Carey; Walls). Henry Brown was born in Louisa County, Virginia, in 1815. He worked at a tobacco factory when he was fifteen as a slave. His wife and Kids were sold to a plantation in North Carolina in 1848 (Walls). His family and wife, Nancy, all believed in God and knew he had a plan for them (Biography.com Editors). Henry Brown started to plan his own escape to freedom. Samuel Smith and James Smith helped with his plan (Walls). Henry was planning to pack himself in a box and ship himself to freedom (Biography.com Editors). His escape plan was very daring and courageous, but with the help of others he could make it work (Walls). Contrary to what Frederick Douglas wanted, Henry made his story public for many to have courage to fight against slavery (Walls). Henry, now being a working class individual, joined the Anti-Slavery Convention in May 1849 (Walls). He became a performer and had his own narrative of his story (Biography.com Editors). Sadly, in 1850, it was not safe for Henry Brown to live in the United States. He sailed to England and embraced show business for twenty-five years (Walls). He married in England and, with his daughter, moved back to the U.S. in 1875 (Biography.com Editors). Henry Brown last performed in Ontario on February 26, 1889.
