Rwandan Genocide v. The Holocaust

Did you know that one-sixth of the number of people died in the Rwandan genocide than in the Holocaust? (The National WW2 Museum, University of Minnesota) It may seem like a large difference but they were both very brutal. Though the large difference in deaths, the two are very similar. The Rwandan Genocide, ~1990 for around 100 days, and the Holocaust, ~1940 for several years, both showed us that there are more civil ways to face problems and the death that happened was preventable. The two are similar in the fact that the power killed whoever was opposing them and the number of deaths was extreme.

According to the University of Minnesota, “During this 100-day period between April and July 1994, nearly one million ethnic Tutsi and moderate Hutu were killed as the international community and UN peacekeepers stood by.” This shows how brutal the Hutus were against the Tutsis. Using these numbers, it averages out to about ten thousand deaths per day. This is like the murder of six million Jews during the Holocaust. As said by Elie Wiesel in the Preface, “That is why everywhere in Russia, in the Ukraine, and in Lithuania, the Einsatzgruppen carried out the Final Solution by turning their machine guns on more than a million Jews, men, women, and children”(viii). This can compare to the Rwandan Genocide with the number of people killed. As proven, the Holocaust was quite like the Rwandan Genocide in how the number of people …show more content…

Though they took place around 50 years apart, the 1940s and 1990s, they were still similar in who was killed and the extreme level of violence. The violence was brutal in both genocides, both killing over 1 million people, and the main power of each genocide killed who they thought best-fit death. We can see learn from the Rwandan Genocide and the Holocaust that there are better ways to solve problems than killing people. The prevention of this can be shown and killing wasn't required.
