The first two presidents of the United States, George Washington and John Adams, had differing levels of success in their presidencies. George Washington had a far more admired presidency, as he was able to maintain neutrality in wars and prevent conflict within the United States. He knew that the country was too weak to fight in wars, so he avoided conflict by maintaining neutrality in a war involving France and Britain.
