The empires of the classical era have many similar characteristics, but they also had many defining qualities. For example, Imperial Rome (31 B.C.E.-476 C.E.) and Han China (206 B.C.E-220 C.E.) have utilized their methods of political control in various ways. These two empires had similar methods of political control concerning defense. Other methods of political control were different in the sense of how they conducted their society within the empires. Methods of political control in imperial rome and Han China were similar in the sense that both empire defense systems were weak and fragmented which later led to the collapse of central governments. Some examples that led to the collapse of the empires include, the Roman and Chinese borders were overrun by incursions time and time again thanks to the weak frontier defense system. As a result of the defense systems being problematic, the empires were forced to build walls to protect the people within the empire. The cost of the defense system soon skyrocketed, and as a result economic prosperity within the society began to erode. The Han and Roman Empire had problems protecting themselves and tried to prevent invasions with the implementation of borders, however the empires ultimately collapsed.
The two empires had different ideas of culture in relation with the people and their viewpoints. The Chinese had a defined hierarchy. Whereas the Romans had a weaker not as defined hierarchy with no equivalent religion to Confucianism. Family was the foundation in Chinese culture, the Romans lacked this particular quality.
