In the 1860’s slavery was a major issue and these abolitionists believed that it should be abolished. Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln all contributed to the movement towards freedom. Harriet Tubman helped freedom by helping the slaves runaway into the Canada. Tubman not only did the runways missions slaves but also helped them settle in Canada. She once said “freedom is not bought with dust”showing that you would need to work for what you want.
Mark Twain and Frederick Douglass both have interesting ways of writing. There are similarities and differences in their writing. They each have their own personal preference toward their style, tone, and perspective. Each story was a remembrance of boyhood written in first person. As evident, Twain’s story takes place as a boy in a town on the Mississippi River.
Lincoln and Douglass were self-made, self-educated, and ambitious, and each rose to success from humble backgrounds. Douglass, of course, was an escaped slave. Douglass certainly and Lincoln most likely detested slavery from his youngest days. But Lincoln from his young manhood was a consummate politician devoted to compromise, consensus-building, moderation and indirection. Douglass was a reformer who spoke and wrote eloquently and with passion for the abolition of slavery
While Reconstruction after the Civil War seemed to have promise for former slaves, there were still many hardships. President Andrew Johnson’s leniency with the south during this decisive period allowed for there to be debate over what the fate of freed slaves should be. Some believed that continuing to work in the fields they were once slaves in was the best option for blacks because of their past as field workers, while others believed that there were more options for blacks than just farm work as seen in the schools built in the south for the black population by the Freedman’s Bureau. However, the question still remained as to what freedom for blacks truly meant. People’s opinions on what freedom for ex-slaves needed to be depended exclusively on their race and their socioeconomic status.
After having read both Frederick Douglass’s Narrative and Harriet Jacobs’s Incident 1. How were Douglass and Jacobs similar and different in their complaints against slavery? What accounts for these differences? In both the inspiring narratives of Narrative in the Life of Fredrick Douglass by Frederick Douglass’s and in Incidents in the life of a slave girl by Harriet Jacobs the respective authors demonstrate the horrors and disparity of slavery in there own ways.
Politics and religion, so often aligned with opposing arguments across American history, coalesced into the concept of political religion twice across the nineteenth century–once in the measured address of a future president to a boy’s debate society, and again in the fiery Fourth of July speech of a former slave. Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass may have entertained different definitions of political religion, but both used the concept to advocate for significant change, with the understanding that American values and democracy were on the line. These two books would be interesting to read because you get to know the author more by knowing their personal experiences and you’d understand the story a little bit better since both books are first person narrative. You get to understand what they have been through and how difficult it was for them try to be who they are remembered for now. They contrast because Twain wrote about how badly he wanted to become a steamboat pilot while Frederick wanted to no longer be a slave. Throughout their stories they encounter problems and they always resolve them. If we get to read these books we get to know more about our past and how things were different before.
Fredrick Douglas and Benjamin Franklin are both one of the most famous successful in American history. They both followed a certain milestone to make them successful. Even though they are considered hard workers, they both have different obstacles and different views in their lifestyle. Fredrick Douglas used to be a slave who was a fugitive and Benjamin Franklin was young white man who had a rough time with his parent because his parents are very abusive to him. By comparing the difference and similarities by these two great people in American history even though they had their rough times, that does not stop them from their success.
Although a century apart, Martin Luther King Jr’s Letter from Birmingham Jail and Frederick Douglass’s What to a Slave is the fourth of July are kindred spirits. Notwithstanding the many differences in their respective writing styles, deep down the essence of the message conveyed is still very much the same. Both Martin Luther King Junior and Frederick Douglas had similar beliefs and concepts related to the treatment of the African American community. They both describe a tough yet heart breaking situation that makes them question their moral values and doubt the system and its ability to change for better.
The ability to read and write is both creative and destructive. This ability opens your eyes to the world and how beautiful it can be. It also has the potential to destroy your entire grip on reality and expose you to the actual world you live in. It imprisons you yet, releases you from your mental confinement. Some people never escape from this confinement, some do; and those who escape sometimes go on to do great things in life.
Finally, in some cases Harriet can be compared to Nat Turner because of how similar they were. Nat Turner was an african american born into slavery just as Harriet was. Both were aggressive abolitionist meaning that they took action for slavery though Turner’s was more aggressive. Although they were both aggressive Harriet never killed anyone over it.

In Fredrick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs narrative they show how the institution of slavery dehumanizes an individual both physically and emotionally. In Jacobs narrative she talks about how women had it worse than men did in slavery. While men suffered, women had it worse due to sexual abuse. The emotional, physical, and sexual abuse was dehumanizing for anyone.
