Smith and Bradford support their explanation by illustrating how they were able to build a community in the new world and their interrelations with the native Americans. Their purpose is to demonstrate how the new world was formed by their small colonies and their intentions to come to the new world in order to have a clearer perspective on why they came. Like in Jamestown and in Plymouth Plantation they had similarities and differences to become one of the first colonies to stable in America.
Thomas Morton’s account New England was different from William Bradford’s account because he thought that the Native Americans were great compared to the Puritans who lived close by. Morton speaks of the Puritans using satire in his literary work New English Canaan. He built the Maypole in spite of them because he knew that this would make them angry: “And upon Mayday they brought the Maypole to the place appointed, with drumes, gunnes, pistols and other fitting instruments… The setting up of this Maypole was a lamentable spectacle to the precise separatists, that lived at new Plimmouth” (372). Thomas Morton’s Anglican religious views counter with William Bradfords Puritan views for New England and because of Morton’s actions and beliefs, he was kicked out of New England and sent back to England to be imprisoned.
William Bradford was the former governor of the Plymouth colony and lived in the 17th century. In the book Mayflower, Nathaniel Philbrick explores what life was like after the First Thanksgiving. By looking at Bradford’s life, historians can understand what life was like in Plymouth. The main way Bradford's life can help historians understand life in Plymouth in the 17th century is religion. While Bradford was alive, he had an apparent zealous attitude when it came to his faith and God.
Being the first two well-known places in which the English would set out to colonize in 1607 and 1620, Jamestown, Virginia and Plymouth, Massachusetts hold very separate set of beliefs, standards, and outlooks on life then and the future to come. While paving the way for things such as slavery, taxes, ownership of land, inclusion of women, tobacco and government assemblies, John Smith and the people of Jamestown became a classical foundation for new life and economic growth for the new world that is, the United States. On the other hand, William Bradford and his people began to realize the intentions of the Church of England were unholy and had strayed away from God’s teachings from the Bible. With this in mind, the Pilgrims set on a voyage to the new world to seek religious freedom. As we know it, the Pilgrims sought for peace and a new way of living that was fair, just and free from religious corruptions.
William Bradford was the second governor of Plymouth and served for 30 or more years. During those years Bradford did what was thought to be best for Plymouth. William Bradford started off by living in England but made it to the New World. Once getting to the New World, Bradford had to make decisions that would help the people of Plymouth and not cause any damage or harm. William Bradford made choices that led to the progress of Plymouth.
On one hand, both colonies were established in the early to mid 1600’s, which goes to show that their resources and technology were very similar if not the same. The primary purpose behind the voyages were different, as one colony had an economic mindset and the other sought religious freedom, however both of these were underlying motives in each voyage, for the Jamestown colonists desired to spread Christianity and the Plymouth settlers chose North America for its promise of economic opportunities. Both colonies faced the inevitable epidemics, harsh winters, and scarce food. However, the difference that made a profound effect in the difficulties both colonies faced during their initial years was each of their relationships with the Native people of the area they colonized. The Pilgrims, on one hand, established peaceful relations (with the help of Squanto) and focused on growing crops and building a stable settlement as opposed to worrying about an attack, which the Jamestown settlers experienced.
Their most predominant difference was that while the New England settlers were seeking religious freedom, the Chesapeake settlers were seeking material wealth. Their differences were the differences in part between the physical and spiritual. Still the New England and Chesapeake settlers had one thing in common, one thing that was applicable to most colonizers of the new world. whatever the price, they were seeking better lives for themselves. The British Settler’s of the new world were ultimately united in their search for a better life.
The arrival of the first Europeans in the Americas is dramatically captured through the many writers who attempted to communicate what they saw, experienced and felt. What is more, the very purposes of their treacherous travel and colonization are clearly seen in their writings; whether it is poetry, history or sermons. Of the many literary pieces available today, William Bradford and John Winthrop’s writings, even though vary because the first is a historical account and the second is a sermon, stand out as presenting a clear trust in God, the rules that would govern them and the reason they have arrived in the Americas. First of all, William Bradford provides an in-depth look into the first moment when the Puritans arrived in the Americas. In fact, he chronicles the hardships they face on their way to Plymouth, yet he includes God’s provision every step of the way.
Both John Smith and William Bradford were Englishmen who came to America and helped to found the earliest colonies in New England. They came at different times and for different reasons. Both tell of events during these travels in their written accounts, but these accounts show that the two men, as well as their goals, were drastically different. Captain John Smith, considered to be the first American writer, came to America in the spring of 1607. He had many adventures prior to the voyage to New England, and thought quite highly of himself, as is clear in his writings.
In the narrative, Of Plymouth Plantation, William Bradford tells his perspective of life in the new world. Bradford was a separatist who had fears of being persecuted, so he fled from Great Britain to Holland, where he lived for about a decade. In 1620, Bradford, his wife, and a group of other separatists decided to travel to America. Bradford and his crew traveled on the Mayflower to Cape Cod, where his wife passed away. Then they continued their journey to Plymouth.

But most importantly, he would speak of the people. Those strange and foreign people who lived so differently than the British. While the British wore stiff petticoats with corsets and tail suits, these new people were draped in deerskin.
