Mexican vs American Culture The culture I selected for this assignment is the Mexican culture. My first exposure to Mexican culture was when I moved from Oklahoma to Las Vegas, NV in my early twenties. However, it was more prominent when I moved from Las Vegas to Phoenix, AZ about seven years later. In Phoenix, a lot of stores had aisle labels in both English and Spanish. In addition, I noticed there was packaged food on the shelves that I was unfamiliar with that were labeled in Spanish. Also, there were authentic Mexican restaurants, not the normal chain restaurants. One of our favorite local restaurants that made authentic Mexican food in Phoenix is Carolina’s Mexican Food.

They are raised to understand their responsibility in caring for their family. Also, it is very common for Mexicans working in the United States to send money back to their family that resides in Mexico. In addition, Mexicans are minimalist, so you may find several generations residing in one residence, but you will always see that the father is the head of the family and the decision maker, while the mother is an important part of the family, their role in the family is secondary to that of the father/husband (Resources, 2022). I have personally experienced how important family is in their culture for my brother-in-law is married to someone from the Mexican culture as well as I work with someone whose husband is from the Mexican culture. In the American culture, people are taught from an early age to be independent, have their own life goals, and don’t depend on others for anything whether family or non-family. Also, within most American families both the husband and wife have professional careers and their children are brought up with very little guidance from their parents. Whereas as stated above, the Mexican culture is all about family and helping one another out, including extended family. Additionally, it is rare for the wife to work outside the home because they are responsible for caring for the children and the domestic chores.
