Thornton Wilder has written two different and unique novels in his lifetime. The two novels that I am discussing are Our Town and The Bridge of San Luis Rey. These two novels have both similar and different qualities. In this paper I will be comparing the similarities, and the differences of the two novel’s tone, mood, atmosphere, message, author’s style, word choice, audience, and structure. The first novel that I will be talking about is Our Town. The first quality of Our Town that I will be discussing is the tone. The tone of Our Town is serious, because Thornton Wilder is trying to get his point across to the readers. Thornton Wilder wrote Our Town, so he would be able to get his idea out everyone overlooks ordinary days, the little things, and we take them for granted, “No… I should have listened to you. The first quality of this novel I will be describing is tone. The tone of this novel is serious because Thornton Wilder wants to get his message across to the readers. Thornton Wilder wrote The Bridge of San Luis Rey, so he could show readers that they can not judge people based on your perspective. Thornton Wilder wants his readers to get this message from his novel, and he is very serious about it, and this comes across in his writing, “And on that instant Brother Juniper made the resolve to inquire into the secret lives of those five persons…”(pg.7). This quote from the book shows that Thornton Wilder is serious about this topic because this seconds after the rope bridge collapsed.
