In Chapter 4 Amar focuses on how the president 's power will compare with other types of political power both foreign and domestic. One of the differences included the amount of time a single term of presidency would be-four years as opposed to a monarch 's lifetime reign, or a governor’s one year period. An important change in how the president came to be in office was that he was chosen from the people he would govern, this was not true of either monarchs or governors.

Throughout American history, there have been numerous shifts and changes in politics and in the government. From the time George Washington was sworn into office in 1789 to Andrew Johnson’s assumption of presidency in 1808, one of the most prominent changes is the transformation of the presidential power and interpretation of the Constitution. As time goes on, the influence of the president gradually expands and evolves from a tightly constrained role into a significantly powerful position. The authority of the president grows along with the expansion of the nation's prosperity and prestige in the world. During the Revolutionary War in the late 18th century, the Founding Fathers created America and established a new system of governing.
In “Perspectives on the Presidency” from The Presidency in a Separated System, Charles O. Jones argues that the United States government is not merely influenced and led by the president. Jones argues in favor of the United States having a separated system, rather than a presidential system. In this separated system, the role of the president varies, depending on resources and strategy. Jones proceeds to discuss two types of perspectives of the president; the Dominant Perspective and the Alternative Perspective. In the Dominant Perspective, political parties are stronger than they normally are in a system of separated elections, the opposing party acts as a critic of the party in power, and the president is, idealistically, aggressive.
As seen in our current legal system, laid out in the Articles of Confederation, a weak government leaves too much power in the hands of each individual man and progress is difficult. The first article of the Constitution directly addresses this by dividing legislative power between a two-house congress. Having two houses allows for both the will of the majority and state to be considered. The remaining power is divided between the executive and judicial branches. The executive branch features the President of the United States of America, elected through a series of voting by the majority and a group designed to reflect the majority called the electoral college.
The Constitutional Republic of today and colonial times Many of the laws and policies from the colony era are still in effect. The federalist papers speak on the behalf of most of these policies. Also the check and balance system, the process in which bills become laws, and lastly the three branches of the government. It is important to remember even the policies that are not in effect today, because they shaped our government into what it is today.
Thomas E. Cronin, Michael A. Genovese, and Meena Bose structured the fourth chapter of Paradoxes of the American Presidency, titled “Presidential Power and Leadership,” around three central ideas. First, the authors examine American views on presidential leadership and powers, as well as how those views contribute to cycles in American politics. Second, they discuss and critique both the president’s political power, as well as the powers invested in the office by the Constitution.
This method of separation is known as “checks and balances” referring to the three branches of government the executive, legislative, and judicial branch. The legislative branch is supposed to be the stronger one. It consists of the Congress divided in two chambers: a House of Representatives and a Senate. The members of the House of Representatives are elected by the people and have the responsibility of encouraging popular consent and the Senate is elected by the state legislatures. The executive branch consists of the president, who has the power to receive international ambassadors, negotiate treaties with acceptance of the Senate, and appoint major personnel.
In a representative democracy and in socialism there are checks and balances. In the US, the judicial branch can look at laws and rule them unconstitutional. For legislative, congress can overturn presidential vetoes and treaties with 2/3 vote from both houses, can reject nominations of judges, and can impeach the president. In a socialist government, prime ministers do not have many limitations, but countries like Canada do not have fixed term lengths so Prime Ministers can either stay for a long time
The parliamentary system that has been established within Canada, despite the pros and cons of the system, is still one of the best political structures for government. It is clearly superior to the United States Congressional system on the three following levels: Fusion of powers (allowing more coherence), the solidity of the responsible government set forth by Canadian administration as well as the doctrine of party discipline. Together, they enable the Prime Minister to have greater power since he is chosen from the legislative but also must have the House of Commons’ vote of confidence which enables greater consistency (and faster decision-making) between branches of government as the legislative and executive are fused together. Similarities and Differences Between USA and UK Governments It is evident that there are some major differences between the US and UK governments. However, it should also be understood that there also underlies some similarities between the aforementioned government systems. This essay aims at dissecting both the similarities and differences between UK and US government both politically and in the manner of ruling. The first similarity is in line with the legislative houses.
Parliamentarism, or a parliamentary government, is defined “as a system of government in which the executive, the government, is chosen by and is responsible to…the legislature.” (Gerring, Thacker and Moreno, 2005, p. 15) With this form of governmental control, many advantages and disadvantages arise, especially when this system is compared to the likes of ‘Presidential systems’ or even that of ‘Semi-presidential systems’. However, my aim within this essay is to, both, highlight to advantages of parliamentarism, and to also give my opinion as to why this system is better when compared and contrasted with the aforementioned systems. In this academic piece I will be looking at the benefits and pitfalls of each form of government as well as give a few examples of each and decide if they were successful.
