The U.S Foreign Policy began to transition during after the election of Thomas Jefferson; though Britain was still bitter, and refused to create a commercial treaty or even merely ratify it’s Navigation Laws. Imperialism is the practice of a nation attempting to use force, diplomacy, or other methods to expand its influence beyond its own borders. When the United States became a more powerful country, it started to want to expand its influence, especially in places where doing so would be advantageous to the country. The early 1800s saw the start of these initiatives to increase our political and economic might, as well as that of our European competitors. The Kingdom of Hawaii was one of the first territories that the United States sought to colonize. Sitting in the waters of the Caribbean Sea are two islands known as Cuba and Puerto Rico. When viewing these islands, the most common error individuals make is mistaking the two islands as being identical to each other. The Monroe Doctrine was the Idea of the fifth president Of the United states James Monroe. It was passed on December 2, 1823, in the 7th annual message to congress. Before the 20th century the United States was an isolationist nation but around the late 19th century America decided to convert into an imperialist power. They had numerous reasons to shift into being an imperialist nation. America didn’t want to begin imperializing to settle and live in the nations they were taking over, they already had America for that reason, they wanted to adopt these nations for what they had to offer, which was many things. America saw an opportunity to improving their nation and took it. Even if there were many causes for America to imperialize, three of them stood out the most.

It wasn’t until the end of the Spanish-American war that Puerto Rico became a U.S. property. Even then (after being conquered by the U.S. in the year 1900), the common American belief was that Puerto Ricans weren’t inherently equal any more than they thought that blacks were racially equal to whites. Rather, because the American public wouldn’t consent to treating Puerto Ricans as equals or granting them citizenship, the U.S. had trouble keeping the island as an imperial possession.
At the start of the 19th century, America was already expanding its territory. In 1803, the United States of America had bought the Louisiana Territory, it was bought from France which had made the country two times larger. In 1819 Spain had given up their territory of Florida to the United States. President Monroe issued the “Monroe Doctrine” in 1823, its main purpose was to warn the European countries to not enter the Western Hemisphere. In order for America to achieve its goal of becoming an imperialist nation they had conquered other countries economically, culturally, and with a strong military in the late 1800’s.
