New England was a very diverse community that combined two completely different cultures. The Puritans were very traditional and followed the church till the very end. They kept communities small and genders divided. The people of the church also did not trade with their neighbors to keep their religion uninfluenced. The new generations living in New England embraced capitalism with open arms and separated their church and state powers. They also spread out their communities and provided personal property though women were still treated as inferior. A sense of democracy still tied the two cultures together and both communities were based on agriculture. The Puritans were a very modest people who followed strict rules based on their religion. Their economy was based off internal trade because they believed that materialism was a sin. Their society was agricultural based so their communities could bring trade to a minimum. They also kept their communities tight together so the church could constantly watch them. The New England society was also agricultural based but they were more spread out because there was no church to force them together. They believed in congregationalism which allowed them to have power over all the people in the state because the church could have major influence. They did allow some freedom through their Church Democracy. It was a start to them eventually opening up to the world, even if they weren’t ready to.
