In the short story “Thank you Ma’am” a boy named Roger steals from an old lady, and he learns a lesson. In the story “Rules of the Game” A little girl named Waverly tries to make her mother proud. In the short stories “Thank You, Ma’am” and “Rules of the Game” Roger and Waverly compare and contrast because they both experienced tough love, are different ages, and have different work ethics. In both of the short stories, Roger demonstrates poor work ethic, because he tried to commit a crime and attempted to steal a purse. Waverly demonstrates great work ethic because she worked really hard to become a chess champion. She was willing to give up other things she loved to do, like going to the playground. In the short story “Thank you, Ma’am”, it says “I wanted a pair of blue suede shoes. Well, you didn’t have to snatch my pocketbook.” Roger said how he just wanted to have nice blue shoes, so he decided to try to take her purse for some money. This shows that Roger has a low work ethic, because he resulted in trying to steal. Tan writes “I no longer played in the alley of Waverly Place. I never visited the playground where the pigeons and old men gathered.” (Tan 5). Waverly expresses that she has fully committed to playing chess, and gives up stuff she likes to do in order to be successful playing chess. She shows a high work ethic because she is willing to work for her goals.
