While both the ancient Roman Empire and Tang dynasty have long since fallen, many lessons can be learned from how these two once great Empires were able to expand as well as maintain their empire. These strategies have stood the test of time and are still relevant today. Even during different time periods as well as in different regions in the world, several of the same strategies were used by both empires. Their ability to expand their territory and create significant innovations would aid to the success of their respective empire along with leave a lasting mark on history. Rome began as only a small city state originally founded in 753 B.C. The small city state was under the control of foreign powers until 510 B.C. when the Romans over threw their Etruscan king and his family peacefully (Dunstan, 2010). Other Latin city states formed alliances against Rome but were ultimately unsuccessful due to unrelated battles over land from mountain tribes. Before long, Rome began signing treaties with not only the other Latin city states, but mountain tribes as well. These treaties allowed the league of Latin city-states, the Hernici (an eastern mountain tribe) and Rome to defeat the Volsci. Around 390 B.C.
