Ruthie and Lucille both had a rough start to their lives. After the flood that affected the whole town both the sister’s lives began to change. The girls got used to everyone leaving them and when their Aunt Sylvie decides to stay and raise them Lucille seems to panic. Ruthie sees life differently than Lucille. Ruthie is the younger sister. She is very shy and doesn’t fit into Fingerbone. When they both get confronted about missing classes Ruthie is more of the focus of their concerns. She is seen as being quiet and not fitting into the mold of others. Lucile makes the remark that she can change. Ruthie is more go with the flow type of girl. Lucille is older than Ruthie. She worried about what others in the town along with her peers think about her. Lucille doesn’t agree with the way Sylvie keeps the house. She wants to be friends with the popular girls. She gets a letter from Nona and Lily asking her to come home and see them and eventually taking over the care of Ruthie and Lucile. She was a drifter for most of her adult life. This makes her view on how to live/care in a house different than most. She hoards newspaper, along with magazines. She packs up all the dishes and puts them in the corner. Sylvie airs the house out for days it seems by leaving the windows and doors open. After she realized that the town of Fingerbone does not appreciate the way she is raising Ruthie. They thought that the way she lived and the adventures that they went on were dangerous. She tries to change her ways by starting to clean up the house. By burning the magazines and newspapers and eventually the house. By her doing this it indicates that a change is coming. Both Ruthie and Sylvie leave the town of Fingerbone to live as
