In an era dominated by male achievements, Sally Ride and Amelia Earhart are two names that have been remembered and glorified for their achievements in aerospace, piloting, and pushing other young girls to achieve their goals. Ride and Earhart refused to fit the status quo and leave the game-changing moves to the men around them. Instead, they achieved tasks that were unthinkable to males and females alike. In doing so, they broke barriers and paved the way for others to follow. Both women had a go-get-it attitude and interesting early lives, but a most striking comparison reveals that these women had entirely different motives, some good and some not so good. Amelia was not the best pilot, she constantly crashed but was able to impress the reporters each time. She was eventually dubbed “Lady Lindy” and her reputation grew (Harmon 2-3). She gained an audience, and she kept staging more attention-grabbing flights (Harmon 4). This eagerness to impress the world led her to complete her various flights to draw the most attention. Eventually, her ambitious behavior led to her downfall, and she crashed during her solo around-the-world flight (Harmon 4). Sally Ride was as successful, if not more successful than Amelia. However, Ride was not in it for herself. Glancing at her post-astronaut years, Ride reveals her true compassionate and kind demeanor. Ride left her high-ranking job at Nasa and instead chose a career in teaching and helping kids.
