Leadership is the ability to guide or influence others with an objective of achieving a desired outcome. It involves influencing beliefs, opinions, values, perceptions, or behaviors of an individual or a group, and it is an amalgamation of inherent personality traits, learned skills, and it is a response to situational stimuli. I believe that, at any particular moment, where two or more individuals are interacting, one of them will emerge as the leader the other(s). To me, this means leadership role is fluid, and it changes as situational stimuli changes. For instance, during interpersonal interaction involving two individual, the leadership role has potential to shift from one individual to the other, as the situational stimuli changes.
Presidential systems of government have a separation of executive and legislative power, with each party elected separately. This is intended to provide a system of checks and balances to ensure each party is acting in the best interests of the people with the legislative power handling policy making and the president handling policy implementation. Cabinet systems of government rely on a fusion of executive and legislative functions and structures. In this case the people elect the cabinet members who then go on to elect a chief executive. This type of government relies on the cabinet and chief executive to have faith in each other as at any time either party can decide the other is behaving incorrectly and have the people elect a new cabinet.

There are many different views and perceptions on leadership and what it exactly means. This is because there are many different types of leaders and many different views on them. But the basic meaning of leadership is an individual who can select the right group of followers and influence them through their distinct gifts, abilities, skills and knowledge. A leader focuses on the follower and puts out a roadmap to the overall mission and vision; hereby the follower is influenced to willingly and enthusiastically in achieving the mission and vision. The leader achieves this influence by humbly delivering a visionary perception of the future in clear terms that resonates with the follower in terms of their believes and values.
Throughout time, the concept of “democracy” has been misunderstood and misused by the majority of governments around the world. In the Ecuadorian case, despite suffering innumerable dictatorships in command of several presidents such as José Maria Velasco Ibarra or Guillermo Rodríguez Lara, democratic ideas have prevailed and continue to evolve through the history and through the time. In fact, nowadays democracy is the principal political system in this country, in which the notion of popular sovereignty can be recognized. However, it is not clear what kind of democracy the Republic of Ecuador has. So, in order to clarify what was said before, it will be taken into consideration: (1) the definition of democracy according to three important authors, (2) the principal characteristics of a democracy and the two main types of democracy: (3) direct and (4) representative.
