The Ohio River was especially important to the French because it provided a vital link between their lands in Canada and their lands in Canada and their settlements along the Mississippi. Native Americans choose sides Native Americans had hunted animals and grown crops in the Ohio Valley for centuries. He was one of the few English settlers who had an indian wife, Molly Brant. Molly Brant was the sister of the Mohawk chief Thayendanegea later to be known as Joseph Brant. Molly and Joseph became valuable allies for the English. The English also won Native American allies in Ohio Valley by charging lower prices than the French for trade
