The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was an excellent book, one I particularly enjoyed reading. So you could imagine my excitement to watch the modern movie adaptation. I went into this movie expecting a solid adaptation of the novel, which is what I recommend for the expectations a viewer should have. I believe that you will be pleasantly surprised by some moments, and disappointed by others. It does appear that the movie spared very little expense in its visuals, as the visuals of Gatsby’s parties and mansion are stunning and unforgettable. I think the selection of Leonardo DiCaprio for Gatsby is a highly effective choice, as he really draws out the nuance in Gatsby, and his personality remains as enchanting as described by Fitzgerald. The movie, despite being shot in the 21st century, captures much of the 20th century, with the olden vehicles, the slang, and most importantly, the music. The music in this movie is certainly worth talking about, as it features jazz music in the background that reflects the time period, the Jazz Age, but additionally, it features hip hop music that does not reflect the time period at all. Now, you might not appreciate that the movie has chosen to stray from the 20th century with its more modern music selection, but it can’t be denied that the music certainly strengthens the impact of a lot of key moments. Moreover, I think the hip hop music is kind of special in a way, because since hip hop has tremendous jazz influence and was inspired by jazz, the music feels like a nod to how the Jazz Age has influenced the modern era. Another thing I really appreciate is the attention to detail, because the movie certainly displays that it is conscientious of the time period, with its expressive and gorgeous fashion, and the day to day life feeling a lot more like the Jazz Age than
