In the book The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald it can be seen that being wealthy does not mean that you are happy. Additionally, Baz Lurhmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby focuses on the Gatsby and his extreme wealth to strengthen Fitzgerald’s argument that having a lot of money or being in the wealthiest class will not bring you the happiness you think it will.
In the book The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald it can be seen that Gatsby is wealthy, but he still feels empty on the inside. For example Gatsby is one of the richest men alive. His house is huge and he has hundreds of servants yet, he still is not fully happy with his life. Happiness is not based on how much money someone has but based on the people someone surrounds themselves with. However, most people believe that money is their source of happiness, but it can be seen in The Great Gatsby that being wealthy will not make someone happy, but instead lonely. Bax Luhrmann shows this by Gatsby being obsessed with one girl, Daisy, and making his whole life revolve around her. In the movie it can be seen that Gatsby is a very lonely person. He has no friends or family, only servants who he bosses around. It can be seen that Gatsby is more lonely than he is rich. Moving forward, when Gatsby decides to have Nick invite Daisy over to Nick's house so he could see her, he made sure that the room was perfectly decorated so that Daisy was impressed with Gatsby. In Gatsby's mind he decided that he needed all of these meaningless objects to make Daisy want Gatsby back. However, buying all of these flowers to impress Daisy was meaningless because it was not the flowers that made Daisy happy, it was Gatsby being there.
