Art from the natural world were made back in the day by indigenous people. Indigenous people or our ancestors used natural materials in order to create works of art. These artworks are pieces of artifacts that allow art historians to understand how our ancestors perceived art. In this essay we will be talking about the Painted Elk Hide and the Black-on-black ceramic vessels. According to Gardner’s Art Through the Ages, the Painted Elk Hide was made in the 1900s in the state of Wyoming and was made by Cotsiogo. Cotsiogo was a member of the Eastern Shoshone tribe and was eventually put on a reservation during his lifetime. The Painted Elk Hide is a painting that displays displays elements of several dances. The main dance being the Sun Dance which was a dance that had intentions of honoring the Creator Deity for the earth’s bounty as stated in Khan Academy. It was also noted in Khan Academy that the Wolf Dance was displayed which was a ceremonial gathering. Besides the elements of dancing there were animals such as buffalo and eagle that were shown being apart of the Sun Dance. Cotsiogo used natural materials as well as some materials that were traded in order to make his painting. The meaning behind using the natural materials was to show how life was like. This is because the Painted Elk Hide was made in regards to show activities of daily. This meant that the Painted Elk Hide was a piece of art that depicts oral history.
