Georgia O’Keefe’s Deer’s Skull with Pedernal is a 36-inch x 30-inch oil painting on canvas. Atfirst glance, the viewer immediately sees that the painting is composed of a deer’s skull hanging from a small tree with mountains in the background. The background is mostly made of of tones of blue, including the mountains. It seems that they are meant to blend in with the sky behind them, and the blue tones get bolder as the move to the top of the painting. Closer to the viewer is the tree in the painting. The tree also seems to be blending with other elements of the picture. The lower left branch is curved in a way that cooperates with the edge of the mountain.
